However, with this post, you will be getting simplified details on how to pursue this scholarship and eventually get it. There is so much information embedded in this post so ensure you stick with it to the end.

What are the Edinburgh Global Research Scholarships?

This scholarship program is one which the University of Edinburgh organizes to support scholars willing to further their education. The University offers 30 scholarships for Ph.D. Research Programme, though it’s possible this figure changes with the session. The student’s amount after a successful application varies based on the course of study.

Edinburgh Global Research Scholarship will cover the difference between the tuition fee for a UK/EU postgraduate student. It also covers the fees chargeable to an overseas postgraduate student. The target group is international students.

There is no specific field of study for this scholarship, and any of them goes. The awards do not cover the scholar’s maintenance expenses. They are also tenable for three years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Scholarship Eligibility

Before applying for the scholarship, have in mind that there are criteria that you must observe. Like many other scholarships, the Edinburgh scholarship has certain conditions that all applicants must meet. They include:

  • The applicant must be an international or overseas student.
  • They must be commencing or have applied for admission to a full-time Ph.D. level program in the university.  They must be pursuing research work on any course of their choice.
  • All must be liable to pay the tuition fees at the applicable rate to international students.
  • Having outstanding academic merit and research potential is a crucial factor.
  • The scholarship considers candidates with an upper second class honors Bachelor’s degree or the overseas equivalent. However, to be competitive, such candidates should preferably have a first-class Bachelor’s degree with an exquisite Master’s degree supplementing. Always remember your chances are broad when you have better academic results.

Other Excluding factors

Below are some factors which could lead to the removal of a candidate:

  • The University will not consider individuals who already have a Ph.D. or any other equivalent honors. This occasion is due to direct research training.
  • You may have applied for your Master’s program in a particular year and your Ph.D. the following year. If this is the case, you are not eligible for an award in the current year of your Master’s.
  • The University of Edinburgh will not consider students already undertaking a Ph.D. program.
  • You cannot hold an Edinburgh Global Research Scholarship with some equivalent scholarships. Consider scholarships like a Commonwealth Scholarship or a Marshall Scholarship as equivalent.

Additionally, please note that the university doesn’t consider financial status, the proposed field of study, and nationality.

About the University of Edinburgh

What do you think a 439-year-old university has to offer you? At the University of Edinburgh, there’s much more to education than just books and pens.

Founded in 1582 by King James VI, the university officially began operation in 1583. It is now one of Scotland’s four ancient universities and the sixth-oldest university in operation presently in the English world.

The public research university has played a vital role in Edinburgh’s present-day fame. It has also made Scotland an intellectual center, giving it the nickname “Athens of the North.” Edinburgh is a member of numerous associations, including Russell Group, Una Europa, and League of European Research Universities.

As of July 2021, it had a total income of one thousand, one hundred and seventy-five point six million euros. A good amount of this money came from grants and contracts from the top bodies in the education field.

Edinburgh receives over 60,000 undergraduate applicants every year, making it the second most popular university in the UK. It is the eighth-largest university in the UK by application, with 33,375 students in the 2019/2020 session.

There are still links to the royal family in the University today. These links include Prince Philip, Princess Anne, and the Duke of Edinburgh, its chancellor from 1953 to 2010.

The architecture surrounding the building is gothic and magnificent. It contains historical and architectural significance, such as those in the Old Town.

Speaking of notable alumni, we have historical figures like the famous Alexander Graham Bell and naturalist Charles Darwin. Some of them are philosophers David Hume, physicist James Clerk Maxwell, Sir J. M. Barrie, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
